DIY Kimono CardiganBefore you get started, you’ll need a few things:

  • The kimono cardigan pattern, which you can download for free online
  • About 2 ¾ yards of a lightweight fabric of your choice
  • A pair of sharp scissors
  • A sewing machine or needle and thread
  • An iron and ironing board

Cutting your fabric

Once you have everything you need, it’s time to get started. Begin by cutting your fabric according to the dimensions on the pattern. Make sure to use sharp scissors so you can get clean lines, and if your fabric is particularly delicate, consider using a rotary cutter instead.

Assembly

Now that you have your pieces cut, it’s time to start assembling your kimono cardigan. The first step is to sew the shoulder seams together. Make sure to press the seams open once you’re finished sewing to ensure a clean finish.

The sleeves

The next step is to sew the sleeves onto the body of the kimono. You’ll want to make sure the right side of the fabric is facing each other before you start sewing, and then press the seams open once you’re finished. Repeat this process for the other sleeve.

The sides

Once the sleeves are in place, it’s time to sew the sides of the kimono cardigan together. Start at the bottom hem and sew all the way up to the sleeves. Don’t forget to press your seams open once you’re done.

The cuffs

Now it’s time to add the cuffs to the sleeves. Start by folding the cuff piece in half and pressing it. Then sew the short ends together before folding it in half again and pressing it once more. Finally, pin the cuff to the sleeve, sew it in place, and press the seams open.

The hem

Now that your cuffs are in place, the last step is to hem the bottom of the kimono cardigan. Fold the bottom edge inwards about ½ inch, press it, and then fold it inwards once more. Sew along the folded edge, and you’re done!

There you have it, a beautiful and easy DIY kimono cardigan that you’ll be proud to wear. Play around with different fabrics to create the look and feel that’s right for you.
