Why Vaccinations are Important

Pup with a BandageVaccinations are a crucial part of your puppy’s care. Just like babies, puppies are born with immune systems that are not yet fully developed. Vaccines help build up their immune system and help prevent diseases like parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, and rabies. These infections can be fatal and some can even be passed from dogs to humans.

Additionally, many kennels and boarding facilities require proof of vaccinations for your pup to stay with them. It’s important to make sure your pup is up-to-date on their shots so they can be included in these fun activities too!

When to Start Vaccinations

Pup on a Vet TableThe first shot your puppy will get is a combination vaccine called the DHPP – it protects against distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and parainfluenza. This first shot can be given as early as 6 weeks old. From there, they will need a booster shot every 3-4 weeks until they reach 16 weeks old.

After their puppy shots are complete, they will need yearly booster shots to keep their immunity up. Your vet will help guide you through this process, and may suggest additional vaccinations depending on your area and your pup’s lifestyle.
